Jabberwocky for December 25, 2008

Lagniappe

The Inner Life of the Cell, created by a group at Harvard, is an astounding computer-generated animation of what occurs within a cell. Several versions are available.

The version I would watch first has music.

Three more versions are found on this page, each having narration that explains what you are seeing.

Free Rice is an interesting vocabulary building site that contributes 20 grains of rice to UN World Food Program for each word that you get right.

The Big Spanish Castle has a cool optical illusion.

Personal update

It seems that my posting in this blog will not always occur daily. It has been several months since I last posted, I will be posting regularly for a while again and want to start by catching people up with my life.

By last July, I had once again gotten deeply immersed in my work on graph isomorphism and spent the next few months wrestling with some theoretical issues that lie at the heart of the problem. I made some interesting progress, but then had to devote much of my spare time to the work that I was getting paid to do. The fall and early winter was spent mostly on my job, and I'm pleased with the applications that I worked on. There were many opportunities for creative work and the development of some new algorithms.

Unfortunately, I lost my job last week and have begun a job search. I plan to spend the gift of time that this affords me on my research, my writing, and on reading while actively pursuing a new and rewarding position.
