UND CSci 160 student comments regarding Craig Holman | |

In the fall term of 1992, I taught two large sections of an introductory course on programming in Modula 2 at the University of North Dakota. Although this course was the first course in the Computer Science sequence, it was also required of all aviation majors, of which there were over 2,000. As a result, most of the students in these sections were aviation majors who had heard that it was the course from hell and were terrified of it. In addition to these two sections, I was teaching a database course, 12 independent studies on C++, and supervising some graduate students. I had a great challenge ahead of me - I needed to make the course of value to the computer science majors and others that wanted to learn to program while making it possible for the aviation majors to do well in and enjoy the course. I made each of the ten programming assignments was a game, ranging from Guess A Number through a Random Insult Generator to Battleship. I made myself available as much as I could to these students, averaging 110-hour weeks throughout the term. Nearly all of the approximately 120 students that started Introduction to Programming I completed and passed it, and more than half of them earned an A. It was exhausting and the best teaching experience of my life. The following are all of the comments from student evaluations for this course. (I did not pick the book.) - Craig Holman
The teacher is very fair with the students. I've never seen a teacher at UND with this much respect for students. He was also available for help and this was very nice. I feel he does an excellent job and deserves great recognition for this. I was very impressed by the amount of care & time Craig put into his class. He cares (a lot) about his students and their progress. Craig is very dedicated and hard working. I wish there were more teachers like him in the world. - M. Pulka There have been too many students in this course. The textbook is awful. But the teacher is really helpful. I have had one other programming class before this. I believe by far Craig did an excellent job overall teaching this course. He took a difficult class and made it enjoyable and a great learning experience. He was fair and impartial on grading. I noticed this by how much and how equally he tried to help students. This course was very challenging. Craig Holman definitely takes an interest in his students academics. I believe he does a pretty good job. The course was very time consuming. What could have been a very boring class was made quite interesting by Craig Holman. The reading assignments aided in comprehension of things, but some things in the book were a bit fuzzy. I really appreciated Craig's accessibility. He was very helpful and did a good job of explaining ideas and procedures so we could understand them. He is very personable, and expresses a genuine and sincere concern for his students' learning experience. I feel he is an excellent instructor. Craig gave an incredible amount of help which I think helped me pass this class. This class should not be required for Aviation Majors. This should be for CSci majors only. I'll never use this language again. Craig was a good teacher. Craig is an incredible instructor and is the only reason I didn't drop the class. Craig made himself available to everyone for extra help, and truly cared about our progress. Unfortunately the book required for the class is not very helpful and didn't seem to fit into the class work. The work moved too quickly for me, and I couldn't help but wish for more time and class to understand the information. Maybe another 160 class that moves slower should be made available for non-computer science majors. Craig is the most enthusiastic teacher I have ever met in 4 years at UND. He offered unparalleled amounts of help. If it weren't for the help Craig gave, I don't think I would have been able to make it through. UND should be proud to have such an inspirational teacher. Craig has brought a new light to CSci 160. As I heard from many students who previously took this course, it was hell!! Craig explained very technical ideas in an easy to learn manner. Very enthusiastic teacher! Craig Holman works with the students, to help them with problems. He explains things very well and does not get mad if someone doesn't understand something right away. Craig is a very good instructor. He is very dynamic and fun to learn from. Craig is an outstanding teacher who should be commended. I don't think that I have every seen someone work so much overtime to help students individually. Craig is also interested in students progress more than any other professor. Mr. Holman is a very good professor. He understands the needs of his students and has made himself really available for students who need help!! I have never ever in my years as a student seen a teacher so intensely involved with the students well being than Craig Holman. I have never seen a professor so bent on having the students do well. Craig goes way beyond the call of duty on items 7. and 8. [ "The teacher seems interested in the students' educational progress and needs.", "The teacher is available for individual help and consultation." ] Fargo and CMS system need to have more consideration for the students. Craig has been very helpful in working outside of class adding to the my understanding of the course. I've never taken the time to comment about a course or an instructor before now. Mr. Holman is probably the most enthusiastic instructor I've every had. He is a definite asset to UND. He made the course interesting throughout the whole semester and that is important to keep a classes attention for a long semester. There is a lot of work to do for CSci 160 but Mr. Holman made it fun. I just can't say enough about him. He made himself available for help at almost any time. I wish more teachers were like him. He needs a raise though so UND doesn't lose him. Awesome teacher!!! An example (most of the time) for all! Really enjoyed having Mr. Holman as a teacher. He was the first prof I've had here who's come across as really caring about his students. Because of this, I might actually stay at UND. I like the fact that Craig is always willing to meet with students, and give them help. This is something very few teachers take time out of their schedules to do. Craig is an excellent instructor! Craig Holman's dedication and relentlessness has been awesome to experience. One of the best instructors I have ever had. Prof Holman did a great job teaching this class. He gave all of his free time to helping students like myself understand Modula II. Craig was a tremendous help in and out of the classroom. To put it simply Computer 160 really bit the big one. CMS was down a lot and the course was very tough. One good point about the class was the instructor Craig Holman who has been a great help to me and all of the students in the class. He has dedicated an extremely large amount of his free time to help out those of us who have been struggling. He is an excellent teacher and a good person. He is the only reason I'm still in the class now. The outside assignments did not always correspond w/ the lecture. The book is hard to follow. Craig gives extra time to his students that is helpful. Craig was a very giving teaching meaning he was easily accessible for the students. He put in more time into this class than I've ever seen any teacher put in. Yeah, the tests came back a little late, bit deal, but he didn't have time because he was teaching to the students needs. Priorities are aligned correctly. I enjoyed taking 160 Computer Program. The assignments and concepts were very challenging but when I was in need of help, I received it from the teacher or a T.A. I find this course to be excellent. Mr. Holman gives a lot of extra help that he doesn't need to give. I'm glad that this university has such a caring teacher. Mr. Holman is a valuable asset to this college. I feel like the course was very interesting and I feel that I learned a lot. Programs - I wish one could have had more time to finish programs. Maybe less time for the first few because they were easy and more time for the last programs. Teacher - Really outstanding teacher. Course - Teacher made it interesting. Professor dedicated a lot of his personal time to students to help them. The text is worthless and reads like stereo instructions. Some of the code given in the book does not work on our computers. The computer system is not up to date, it keeps breaking down for maintenance, leaving the students high and dry. Craig Holman is a great instructor who takes the time for one-on-one discussions and is willing to take the from his busy schedule to help a student out. I kind of feel bad because he spends so much time on his students. Craig is a very motivating and dedicated teacher. Sometimes, though, I think he needs to take a little time for himself instead of helping students around-the-clock. |
