I am indebted to several friends who have listened to me babble about my
research and have offered me their patient attention and encouragement, even
though they may not always have known what I was talking about. Some of
them understood much more than they let on. They have let me bounce ideas
off of them for years and several have offered me their critiques.
All of them have put up with my quirks and my tendency to go dark for
